Manifest Destiny and a Board Game
Monday Nov 28, 2022
Monday Nov 28, 2022
Welcome! In this episode of History & Game, we travel to a far-off, distant land filled with Europeans, Mexicans, and Natives. Oh my! During the 1800s, the American West represented a place of unending possibilities. Manifest Destiny created the ideology that Americans possessed a divine and God-given right and duty to conquer, beat into submission, tame, and settle the American West. Despite violent Mexican gangs, savage Native tribes, rampant corruption, death, power, and absolute lawlessness, Americans flooded western lands - a terrifying place where life and death can turn on a dime.
During this time, famous lawmen and gunfighters rose to prominence. Men filled with guts of steel and true grit: Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Johnny Ringo, Wild Bill... These American legends possessed the exact cold heart and quick hands needed to survive in a land filled with sun-baked soil and the stench of death.

The Elephant and the Donkey

Tuesday Nov 15, 2022
In this episode of History & Game - recorded in the middle of the night during a severe cold, I might add - we fragment historical narratives only to reveal their interconnectivity (and importance). The 1960s in America brought about numerous changes: the war in Vietnam, home television, the hippy movement, and the tragic, horrific assassination of an American President. In 1960, the Elephant and the Donkey were locked into campaigning full-time, balancing public opinion, and with the invention of the home television, and suffering widespread denigration solely based on public appearance.

John Adams once said, "Freedom must reign in America." Unfortunately, Mr. Adams could not have been further from the truth. In this exciting episode of History and Game, we take a closer look at what people have endured obtaining freedom. Also, we highlight a significant person from American history as they endured traveling 800 miles, over and over again, to allow freedom to those who were intrepid enough to want it.

The Greatest Conspiracy the World has Ever Known
Saturday Oct 15, 2022
Saturday Oct 15, 2022
Conspiracy theories are a dime-a-dozen. From JFK to Apollo 11's moon landing to Andy Kaufman, the world is in no short supply of twisted ideas and outrageous theories supported by massive online groups who wholeheartedly believe in them.
In this episode of History & Game, we jump right into the salient points surrounding the greatest conspiracy the world has ever known: The Anti-Stratfordian conspiracy theory. Also, I provide my first review of a neat little solo-only game that utilizes a popular game mechanism in a way I have never (personally) seen before! Give it a listen and, with a bit of luck, I just might leave you with something to think about - or to google the next time it's 2 AM and your brain refuses to let you sleep...

In this episode of History & Game, we examine narratives that solidify my doctrine on the relationship between nature and humankind: Nature is trying to kill you. Don't believe me? From the Donner-Reed party to Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, nature is a harsh mistress. Check out this episode for a dose of historical stories involving nature, along with a relevant review of an expansion to a beloved game among gamers.

Welcome to the premiere episode of season two of History & Game!
In this episode, learn about Wilmar McClean's awkward war experience as we discuss the American Civil War. We'll hear about the cessation of the war, President Abraham Lincoln's last days, a sweet old woman by the name of Mary Surratt, and the biggest trial of the 19th century that never hits the classroom; and, of course, I give my review of a two-player game that simulates the trial experience!

On October 30th, 1938, actor and director Orson Welles broadcasted a radio dramatization of War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. What followed shows how a little radio prank sent an entire nation into chaos leading to the destruction of property and the loss of lives. War of the Worlds: The New Wave is an asymmetrical two-player game published by Grey Fox Games where players assume the roles of aliens or humanity to fight for the safety of the world or world-domination!
